How to Treat Acne

Acne Dermatologists at The London Skin and Hair Clinic give advice on how to treat acne.

At some point in life everyone suffers from acne and will need to know how to treat acne. Although more common when going through puberty, it can extend into adult life or reoccur.

Acne can be inflammatory or non-inflammatory and is characterized by non-inflammatory follicular pustules and inflammatory pustules in more severe forms. Severe acne can result in scarring.

Overuse of skincare products and exposure to the sun can aggravate acne. Many acne products found for sale over the counter can irritate the skin.

Acne treatment can include medicated face washes, prescription gels and creams, or oral medication including antibiotics or hormonal treatment. An Acne Dermatologist can prescribe a broader range of acne treatments than a GP.

For some patients, oral Isotretinoin can be an option for acne treatment, although there are risks associated with this treatment which is why it can only be prescribed by a Dermatologist and blood tests and close monitoring are required.

Some forms of acne treatment such as laser therapy, light therapy, and steroid injections, can help with outbreaks, but they do not target the underlying causes of the acne.
